This month - 3 Tips for Continuous Professional Development:

  1. Recent reports indicate that 2 out of every 3 new jobs being created in Canada requires some form of Post-Secondary Education. This means that Canada's workforce is continuously becoming more and more educated. If you have been out of school for a while it may be time to consider taking on some part-time studies as a means of updating your skills and keeping up in a competitive marketplace.

  2. Skills inventory - take stock of the strengths that you bring to the workplace and identify your areas for personal and professional growth. Compare your strength and gap analysis with the requirements of your current job as well as future jobs that you may be interested in. By taking stock and preparing for your future growth you will be more likely to be able to pursue positions that fulfill your career interests and passions.

  3. Ask a trusted advisor or colleague to be your mentor. One of the most effective ways to move up within an organization is to take the opportunity to learn from its leaders. Meet with this person regularly to get feedback about your performance. Share your goals and action plans with him/her and ask for input.
