OPENING THOUGHT

"Learning has not taken place until behaviour has changed.”

Bob Pike, CSP, CPAE

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

I always profess "Invest in your greatest asset...people." - well this month I invested in myself by attending Bob Pike's Boot Camp. This two-day train-the-trainer workshop left me re-energized and armed with new ideas for making training stick and, more importantly, transfer to the workplace.

Here are a few of my favourites:

bullet

Before designing any learning initiative, clearly articulate what you want the learners to know, feel or do differently as a result of the training. Request a sample of this tool.

bullet

Early on in a training session, engage the learners by allowing them to have a say in the objectives of the workshop and tailor it to meet their needs.

bullet

Encourage learners to create and commit to an action plan. Then, find ways to reinforce the learning after an event - I call this a "Training Transfer Plan".

bullet

How the leader "sets up" the learning initiative will have a huge impact on how well it is received. He/she should articulate the importance and goals of the training and outline the benefits to the participants as well as the application to the job. This is best done in advance of the actual workshop.

Bob Pike will be in Ottawa to deliver his two-day Boot Camp later this year. Find out more.
