OPENING THOUGHT

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

I bet you're asking "...what does this have to do with the workplace?" Today's literacy figures are mind-boggling - and a little scary. More and more I am becoming mindful of the adult learners in my workshops who may find themselves struggling with the exercises as a result of their personal reading and writing skills. They may struggle because they are operating in their non-primary language or because of learning challenges that I am not aware of.

Implications for the workplace:

As employers, investing in employee literacy will have a positive impact on the bottom line.

One of the biggest challenges for employers in this area is identifying the need. Many may have struggled for years - they get by without having to let their peers know their literacy challenges. If you find yourself in this situation, it is in your best interest to speak to your leader...if you are a leader, it is in your best interest, and that of your organization to identify, in a non-threatening way, who needs some help.
